A report has emerged that a tooth was found in a mooncake sold at the American supermarket chain Sam's Club.

On the 14th (local time), Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) and Chinese media Guangming Online reported this news. According to the report, on the 5th, a woman in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, purchased a meat mooncake priced at 29.9 yuan (about 5,600 won). The woman discovered a tooth while eating the mooncake and reported it to the Chinese police. She claimed that the tooth was neither hers nor any of her family members'.

The woman revealed the identity of the object found in the mooncake in a video, stating, "Consumers who purchased the mooncake left over 100,000 reviews, many of which mentioned that the meat in the mooncake was not fresh," adding, "There were many complaints about stomach pain."

In response, the mooncake manufacturer stated that "it is impossible for a tooth to be mixed in the meat." They explained that the meat undergoes an X-ray inspection process before shipment, making it structurally impossible for a tooth to appear. The manufacturer said they sent related CCTV footage for investigation. They emphasized that such incidents have not occurred for over 10 years and that they even requested the woman who purchased the mooncake to undergo a dental examination, which she refused.

A representative from Sam's Club Changzhou branch said the company is investigating the incident. It is also known that the Chinese government is looking into the case.

Meanwhile, similar incidents have occurred multiple times at Sam's Club locations in China. In 2022, a woman in Fujian Province purchased a Swiss roll at Sam's Club, and her uncle found three artificial teeth in the bread he ate. During this incident, the uncle suffered an injury from a broken tooth. At the time, the store said it would investigate the case but did not disclose the results afterward.

Sam's Club is a membership-based warehouse club under Walmart. It operates in the United States as well as China, Mexico, Brazil, and other countries. It entered the Chinese market in 1996. It has 49 branches in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Dalian, and Hangzhou. According to the official Sam's Club Members Store website, there are over 5 million paid members. Each member spends an average of 13,000 yuan (about 24.38 million won) annually.
