Incheon Metropolitan Dementia Center Ranks First Nationwide in Operational Evaluation... Spreading a Culture of Human-Respectful Care

Incheon Dementia Family Association Self-Help Group Presidential Citation

Incheon City ranked first nationwide in the '2024 Metropolitan Dementia Center Operation Evaluation' hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

According to the city on the 13th, at the 17th Dementia Overcoming Day commemorative event held the previous day at the International Conference Hall of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul, Incheon was the only metropolitan local government to receive the Minister of Health and Welfare Award. Additionally, the Incheon Metropolitan Dementia Center received the Minister's Award.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Central Dementia Center evaluate the performance of 17 metropolitan dementia centers nationwide every year, assessing last year's project operation results and this year's project plans to improve the quality of regional dementia management projects.

Incheon City and the Metropolitan Dementia Center received high praise for their efforts to fulfill the role of regional dementia management coordination agencies, including operating community dementia councils and governance, providing technical support to dementia relief centers, and conducting research. They were also recognized for spreading human dignity care (Humanitude), fostering a well-dying culture for dementia patients, and supporting early-onset dementia patients, thereby addressing blind spots in the national dementia management project.

On the same day, the Incheon Dementia Family Union self-help group (Mulmangcho) was honored with the Presidential Citation for their contributions to overcoming dementia.

Mulmangcho is a self-help group formed by graduates of the dementia patient family support program operated by the Incheon Metropolitan Dementia Center in 2014. For over 10 years, they have continuously worked to improve dementia awareness and conducted mentoring activities among dementia families. Last year, they played a leading role in publishing the nationwide first dialogue collection of dementia families' stories titled "Because of Dementia, Thanks to Dementia," widely promoting the importance of dementia family self-help groups.

Kim Hak-beom, Director of the Incheon City Health and Welfare Bureau, stated, "This achievement is the result of Incheon City, the Metropolitan Dementia Center, and dementia relief centers collaborating to provide demand-centered dementia management services. We will continue to do our best to ensure that Incheon's dementia management infrastructure fulfills its roles in all areas."
