Flight Delays and Cancellations at Nairobi Airport
Thousands of Passengers Stranded
The Kenya Airlines union has launched a strike opposing the privatization of airports, causing disruptions to flight operations at Nairobi Airport and other locations.
According to major foreign and local media on the 11th (local time), the strike began at major airports in Kenya from midnight, resulting in the cancellation or delay of some flights at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). As a result, thousands of passengers were reportedly stranded.
Kenya Airways, the national carrier, stated in a press release that "due to the airline union strike, there may be delays or cancellations of certain flights," and added, "We will continue to provide updates on affected flights."
Moses Ndima, Secretary General of the Kenya Airlines union, explained that the purpose of the strike is to block the privatization of JKIA and to resolve long-standing disputes related to collective bargaining.
Previously, the Kenya Airlines union had announced a strike last month in opposition to the government's plan to sign an investment contract with India's Adani Group for the operation of JKIA, but postponed it to allow for dialogue with the government.
The Adani Group is reportedly planning to invest $1.85 billion (approximately 2.5 trillion KRW) over 30 years to operate JKIA, including expanding the airport by adding a second runway.
The Kenyan government has stated that the contract has not yet been finalized and denies that this constitutes airport privatization.
Meanwhile, on the 9th, the Kenya High Court issued an order to suspend the execution of the contract until the Kenya Human Rights Commission and the Bar Association, who requested a delay, have their case heard.
