Busan National University Honors Patriots: Monument to Be Built by 2025
Commemorating the Sacrifice and Contribution of Patriots and Reflecting on the Meaning of National Remembrance
Busan National University (President Choi Jaewon) and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (Minister Kang Jeongae) signed a memorandum of understanding on June 11 at the university headquarters to commemorate national heroes and promote a culture of honoring veterans through the construction of a “National Heroes Memorial Monument.”
Through this agreement, the two institutions will build a memorial monument for national heroes on the Busan National University campus, aiming to foster a social atmosphere that honors the sacrifices and contributions of these heroes, and to provide an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of patriotism in everyday life.
Accordingly, Busan National University will become the second university nationwide and the first national university to begin constructing a memorial monument for alumni who served as Korean War veterans on campus, with completion scheduled for 2025.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is launching the National Heroes Memorial Monument project at universities across the country for the first time in 2024. Following Yonsei University, Busan National University is the second institution to sign such an agreement and proceed with the project.
Going forward, the two institutions plan to closely collaborate on discussions regarding the construction of the memorial monument, jointly select the list of national heroes to be inscribed, and work together on all related activities. They will also carry out various promotional campaigns to raise awareness of the purpose and significance of the monument, striving for efficient operation and ongoing cooperation under the agreement.
This project is expected to widely publicize the noble sacrifices of national heroes, make the culture of honoring veterans more accessible in daily life, strengthen ties with the local community, and serve as a meaningful new educational site.
In addition, a variety of promotional and educational programs related to the construction of the monument are expected to provide younger generations with opportunities to reflect on the sacrifices of national heroes and appreciate the value of honoring veterans.
At the signing ceremony, Choi Jaewon, President of Busan National University, stated, “It is very meaningful to work with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs on the National Heroes Memorial Monument project to honor Busan National University alumni who served as Korean War veterans. Through the construction of this monument, I hope we can instill patriotism and a spirit of national defense in future generations, and that this significant step, which allows us to remember and appreciate the courage and sacrifice of those who defended our country, will be shared by all citizens.”
Kang Jeongae, Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, said, “It is deeply meaningful to join hands with Busan National University in efforts to remember and carry on the noble spirit of national heroes. The Ministry will continue to support the construction of Korean War veterans' memorial monuments at universities nationwide, so that the culture of honoring and respecting their sacrifices and dedication can take root throughout society.”
