On the 13th at Lotte Concert Hall
Mozart Flute Concerto No. 2
Early music master Richard Yi conducts
Chamber music performance at Sejong Center on the 14th
Yubin Kim, principal flutist of the prestigious San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in the United States, will make her debut performance with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO).
On the 13th, Kim will perform Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 in a regular concert of the SPO held at Lotte Concert Hall.
Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2 was composed in 1778 when Mozart was staying in Mannheim, commissioned by Ferdinand De Jean, a wealthy Dutch music enthusiast. Pressed by the deadline, Mozart adapted his own Oboe Concerto in C major to create the Flute Concerto No. 2. Although it is essentially the same piece transposed up a whole step from C major to D major, with some parts in the solo section altered to better suit the flute, it is regarded as a work that brings out the best possibilities of the flute. The concerto features brilliant and lively motifs. The first movement evokes a bird spreading its two wings and soaring over a wide field, the second movement flows with a lyrical atmosphere as if enjoying a sweet dream while resting in a countryside breeze, and the third movement reveals Mozart’s characteristic cheerful and spirited melodies.
Yubin Kim served as principal flutist of the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra for seven years from 2016 and has been the principal flutist of the San Francisco Symphony under Esa-Pekka Salonen since 2023. She has performed with renowned orchestras both domestically and internationally, including as guest principal flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2021 and 2022. In 2022, she became the first Korean to win the wind instrument category at the ARD International Music Competition.
The conductor for the day will be Richard Egarr, who serves as music director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Choir. Egarr is a British early music master who previously served as music director of the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM).
Before Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2, the concert will open with Mozart’s Symphony No. 39, one of his late three great symphonies. Although it has received relatively less attention compared to Symphonies No. 40 and 41, it is regarded as the most classical and elegant work among the three.
In the second half, Haydn’s Symphony No. 101, known as the "Clock," will be performed. Composed in 1794, the second movement features staccato bassoon and pizzicato strings that evoke the ticking sound and appearance of a clock, which earned the symphony its nickname.
On the 14th, the SPO will present a chamber music performance at the Sejong Center Chamber Hall. Audiences will have the opportunity to see Richard Egarr not only as a conductor but also as a harpsichord, organ, and piano player. Egarr will vividly recreate Handel’s music with members of the SPO, showcasing his expertise in early music. Egarr’s recordings of Handel with the Academy of Ancient Music have earned him the Gramophone Award in 2007, the MIDEM Classical Award and Edison Award in 2009. In 2021, he received the Gramophone Award for Best Choral Recording for Dvo??k’s "Stabat Mater."
In this concert, the Handel trio sonatas performed by the SPO and Richard Egarr are selected from two collections: Opus 2, which consists of six trio sonatas, and Opus 5, which consists of seven trio sonatas. Egarr and the SPO will perform five pieces selected from the thirteen sonatas. The program will open with No. 2 from Opus 2, followed by Nos. 4, 3, and 2 from Opus 5, and conclude with No. 6 from Opus 2.
