Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilhyung Lee), selected for Seoul City's 'Autonomous Bus Pilot Project for Transportation-Disadvantaged Persons,' is promoting the establishment of an autonomous bus system to complement the existing village bus service.

This pilot project was planned to enhance public transportation convenience for transportation-disadvantaged individuals, targeting routes in underserved public transit areas and local commercial hubs. Three autonomous districts, including Dongdaemun-gu, were selected for the pilot project. Each district will receive a budget of 420 million KRW next year.

Dongdaemun-gu has prepared a route plan connecting areas with weak public transportation such as Jangan-dong, Jeonnong-dong, Cheongnyangni Traditional Market, and Kyung Hee University Medical Center. To commence full-scale operation of the autonomous buses, administrative procedures such as designating pilot operation zones and revising related ordinances will be carried out. The necessary budget will be secured with the goal of starting operations in the second half of 2025.

Ilhyung Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “Our district is already undertaking several projects to improve public transportation, including the reorganization of village bus routes,” and added, “We will do our best to play a leading role in transportation innovation based on autonomous driving alongside existing projects.”
