[Opinion] The 100-Year Life Era, Sustainable Future Created by Lifelong Education

In 2025, South Korea is expected to enter a super-aged society where the population aged 65 and over will exceed 20% of the total population.

This demographic shift will have significant impacts on the national economy and social stability, and, coupled with low birth rates, may lead to various social and economic challenges. Accordingly, the government and educational institutions are proposing various policies and programs to prepare for the era of 100-year lifespans, and universities are also seeking new educational models suited to the changing times.

The decline in the workforce and the aging of the economically active population present clear challenges but also offer new opportunities for adult learners. "Learning" is no longer a process limited to adolescence or early adulthood but has become an essential element that must continue throughout one’s lifetime. For middle-aged and elderly individuals, the need to plan and prepare for life after retirement is increasing, and lifelong education plays a crucial role in this process.

Lifelong education is not simply about living longer but plays a key role in improving quality of life and maintaining continuous connections with society. In particular, the social welfare sector focuses on promoting personal development and social integration through lifelong education.

Internationally, Japan’s Recurrent Education, Finland’s digital learning platforms, Denmark’s Flexicurity model, and Singapore’s SkillsFuture policy are exemplary cases that provide re-education and lifelong learning opportunities to help middle-aged and older adults continue participating in the labor market.

Korea is also creating an environment where adult learners can continue lifelong learning by referring to these international examples.

Universities stand at the center of these changes, putting the importance of lifelong learning into practice. Through the national scholarship system, tuition fees are fully supported up to eight income brackets, and customized curricula tailored to the characteristics of adult learners are being developed and operated.

As a result, the number of adult learners, which was only 13 in 2020, has grown to 1,800 in 2024. In the Department of Social Economy and Welfare, adult learners ranging in age from 25 to 79 are currently enrolled, and various research and preparations are underway to support their successful learning and future planning.

Lifelong education is an essential element not only for personal development but also for the sustainable development of the national economy and society. In the era of 100-year lifespans, lifelong education will contribute not only to improving individuals’ quality of life but also to social integration and national development.

Universities will support the dreams of adult learners and become reliable partners to help them move toward a better future. Start your challenge now. A new journey awaits you!
