Supreme Court Confirms Life Imprisonment Sentence
The Supreme Court has upheld a life sentence for a man in his 50s who killed his mistress's husband about three years after being released from prison for murder.
According to the legal community on the 11th, the Supreme Court's 2nd Division (Presiding Justice Kim Sang-hwan) finalized the original court ruling on the 1st of last month, which sentenced Baek, a man in his 50s charged with murder and confinement, to life imprisonment.
Baek was indicted for stabbing and killing his mistress's husband with a weapon in an apartment in Tongyeong-si, Gyeongnam, in May of last year. Investigations revealed that he committed the crime out of resentment after his mistress, with whom he had been involved since October 2022, notified him of their breakup and cut off contact. Baek is also accused of forcibly putting his mistress into a car and confining her for four hours while traveling to Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk. Previously, Baek was sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing an acquaintance with a weapon in 2011 and was paroled in 2020. The parole period expired in October 2021. Both the first and second trial courts sentenced Baek to life imprisonment and ordered him to wear an electronic tracking device for 10 years. Baek appealed on the grounds of unfair sentencing, but the Supreme Court accepted the lower court's judgment and finalized the ruling.
