Mr. A said, "My cousin (Mr. B) is currently undergoing treatment for burns but does not know that the grandmother has passed away and only asks about her well-being," expressing his sorrow, "My cousin has cared for the grandmother like a mother since he was young, so it is truly heartbreaking to part due to this unfortunate accident." He added, "It will take more than a month of treatment before he can be discharged, so I ask for courage and support for my cousin." It is known that Mr. B recently quit his job to take care of his grandmother, whose health had deteriorated, and was staying in the same room with her when the fire broke out. Nearby residents also stated in interviews with various media after the fire that they knew Mr. B had deep filial piety toward his grandmother.
Earlier, at around 6:29 a.m. on the 4th, a fire broke out on the third floor of a commercial building in Tapdong, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province. Due to this incident, a woman in her 90s living on the third floor was injured by inhaling smoke and was transferred to a nearby hospital in an unconscious state but died during treatment. The grandson in his 30s, Mr. B, who jumped from the third floor carrying his grandmother at the fire scene, also suffered severe injuries, including second-degree burns on his upper body, and is receiving treatment after being taken to the hospital.
At the time, Mr. B carried his grandmother and escaped by jumping onto the panel roof at the height of the second floor through the master bedroom window before the fire department arrived at the scene. It is known that he initially tried to escape with his grandmother via the stairs, but due to the building being filled with smoke from the fire, he was forced to make this decision. Later, a rescue process video released by JTBC showed Mr. B holding his grandmother and jumping down, then staying on the second-floor roof while firefighters nearby sprayed water to extinguish the fire. When a nearby resident shouted, "Save the grandmother first," firefighters were seen placing a ladder and climbing onto the roof.
