According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong on the 10th, a man in his 30s from Fukushima Prefecture, identified only as Mr. A, was arrested in May at a hot spring in Yamagata Prefecture after a woman discovered a camera.
The woman noticed suspicious reflective light coming from a rock and upon closer inspection found a camera embedded inside. Following her report, the police arrived at the scene. The police recovered the suspicious rock and arrested Mr. A when he came to retrieve the camera.
Police investigation revealed that Mr. A disguised himself as a hiker and hid behind camouflage netting, carefully moving the camera while observing the surroundings. Mr. A stated, "I purchased the camera online and made the fake rock myself." The rock was about 10 cm in size, with a lens approximately 1 cm in diameter embedded and then hardened with clay.
Reviewing the recovered footage confirmed that there were 44 victims. The man confessed to filming over 1,000 women at various hot springs since 2022 using similar methods. He is also known to have been convicted on charges of possessing child pornography. The prosecution argued that the acts were "planned, repetitive, and fundamentally harmful," requesting a two-year prison sentence.
The verdict is scheduled for the 17th.
