40 Units Installed at Mubongsan and Pilbongsan Mountains
Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 10th that it has installed 40 "visible fire extinguishers" along 27 hiking trails within the city, including Mt. Mubongsan in Dongtan and Mt. Taehaengsan in Bibong, to prevent forest fires.
The "Visible Fire Extinguisher Installation on Hiking Trails" project involves placing firefighting equipment on hiking trails to enable rapid initial response in the event of a forest fire, minimizing damage to forests, lives, and property.
The city explained that it selected hiking trails requiring fire extinguisher installation by considering factors such as forest fire risk, site accessibility, and forest fire occurrence status, and completed installation at locations that are easy to use and access, such as major intersections. The city also installed fire extinguisher boxes designed to prevent damage from snow and rain and to allow visitors to easily open and use the extinguishers. For systematic management of the visible fire extinguishers, the city assigned management numbers to each extinguisher and plans to inspect them alongside regular hiking trail inspections.
Meanwhile, the city has a policy of zero tolerance and strict punishment for violations of the Forest Protection Act, such as referring forest fire arsonists to the prosecution and imposing fines on those who burn waste near forest areas.
Jung Myung-geun, mayor of Hwaseong City, urged citizens to take an active interest and participate in forest fire prevention, especially as many forest fires occur around the Chuseok holiday due to grave visitors' arson or burning of household waste.
