People Power Party Demands Apology for Personal Attacks
Jin Seong-jun, the Policy Committee Chair of the Democratic Party of Korea, apologized on the 10th for making mocking remarks about Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, including comments about his appearance.
On the same day, Jin expressed his apology to Han through social media (SNS). He said, "I apologize." He added, "During the party leaders' meeting on the 1st, I used excessive expressions in response to a question about the impression I had of Leader Han Dong-hoon. I never intended to demean his appearance or insult his character. Although it was merely a highly personal impression, I sincerely apologize if my excessive remarks caused any discomfort."
Previously, Jin appeared on a public YouTube broadcast hosted by Kim Eo-jun, where he mentioned Han's appearance. When the host asked if Han's height was really 180cm, Jin said, "It seemed like he was wearing height-increasing shoes." Regarding Han's shoes, he said, "For a politician, they were quite flashy shoes," adding, "They had two metal decorations. Having even one is somewhat awkward, but it seems like he was trying to show off unnecessarily."
About Han's appearance, Jin also said, "It was the first time I shook hands and saw his face up close, and I felt like I was looking at an alien. His facial features and expressions were not comfortable or natural, and it seemed like he put on a lot of makeup, which made me feel awkward and somewhat creepy."
Cho Guk, the leader of the Cho Guk Innovation Party, was also criticized for making remarks about Han's appearance. On the same broadcast, Cho said, "My height is 181cm, and people say Han and I are the same height. Since Han keeps saying he is 180cm, I am clarifying. Looking at the photo from the National Assembly Speaker's visit during the opening ceremony on the 2nd, you can tell the difference," he mentioned.
In response, the People Power Party condemned the remarks as "personal attacks." Shin Ju-ho, the senior deputy spokesperson, stated in a commentary, "Continuing to mock and ridicule the opposing party leader's appearance shows a lack of basic courtesy and reveals the lowly true nature of the Democratic Party and the Cho Guk Innovation Party. Such baseless slander is the main cause of regression in our politics." He added, "Jin and Cho should sincerely apologize to Leader Han and our people for their low-level disparaging remarks."
