Japan Transport Safety Board Recognizes Airline Accident on the 5th

A Japan Airlines (JAL) passenger plane experienced severe turbulence while flying over South Korea on the 4th, resulting in a flight attendant sustaining a fracture injury onboard.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun and other sources on the 6th, at around 7 p.m. on the 4th, a JAL passenger plane heading from Beijing, China to Tokyo Haneda Airport suddenly encountered severe turbulence at an altitude of 12,500 meters, approximately 200 km east of Seoul.

As a result, one flight attendant in the aisle fell and hit their side severely against a seat, breaking a rib. There were a total of 132 passengers and crew onboard, and no other injuries besides this flight attendant were reported. The Yomiuri stated that the aircraft likely encountered turbulence and that the seatbelt sign was off at the time.

The Japan Transport Safety Board recognized the flight attendant’s injury as an aviation accident the previous day. It was also confirmed that two aviation accident investigators were appointed to handle the investigation after South Korea delegated the investigation of the incident. Kyodo News explained that since the accident occurred over South Korean airspace, South Korean authorities decided to investigate the cause and, based on the International Civil Aviation Organization regulations, delegated the investigation to Japan.
