Pohang City Emerges as a Key Hub for Next-Generation Nano and Semiconductor Industry Development

20th Anniversary Ceremony of the Nano-Convergence Technology Institute: New Leap Vision Declaration

Agreement for Mutual Growth in Advanced Strategic Industries and Expert Forum

Pohang City, North Gyeongsang Province, held a '20th Anniversary Ceremony' at the main auditorium of the Nano Convergence Technology Institute (NINT) on the 6th.

Approximately 200 people attended the ceremony, including Mayor Lee Kangdeok, City Council Chairman Kim Ilman, Yoon Sunghyuk, Director of Advanced Industry Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Yang Geumhee, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of North Gyeongsang Province, Kim Sungkeun, President of POSTECH, Lee Byunghoon, Director of the Nano Convergence Technology Institute, Kim Namgyun, President of the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, as well as officials from the nano industry and research institutions.


During the ceremony, Director Lee presented NINT 2.0, a strategy outlining the institute's mid- and long-term goals and vision, the role of nano infrastructure, and development plans, expressing the institute's commitment to becoming a global leader in the commercialization of nano and semiconductor technologies.


In addition, an agreement for mutual cooperation between government, industry, academia, and research sectors was signed to foster advanced strategic industries.


The agreement establishes a joint cooperation system among Pohang City, North Gyeongsang Province, POSTECH, the Nano Convergence Technology Institute, the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, and 15 leading advanced companies, aiming to contribute to the development of advanced industries in the region and the mutual growth of the participating organizations.


At the ceremony, commendations were awarded to individuals who contributed to the advancement of nano and semiconductor technology in the region and to the establishment and development of the Nano Convergence Technology Institute.


The commendations were given to Kang Moonsik, CEO of Innersensor, Kim Junghoon, Principal Researcher at the Nano Convergence Technology Institute, Hong Byeonghee, CEO of Graphene Square, Lee Hyunkyu, An Jeongmi, and Hwang Hyeonju, Senior Researchers at the Nano Convergence Technology Institute, and Shim Cheonman, Executive Director at DB HiTek.


The ceremony concluded with a commemorative tree planting for the 20th anniversary of the institute's founding, followed by a power semiconductor and nano technology forum.

The institute was established in 2004 as a POSTECH-affiliated research center designated by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to support research and commercialization in the field of nanotechnology by utilizing nano infrastructure, and was designated as a national research facility by the Ministry of Science and ICT in 2019.


The institute's projects, including the construction of advanced technology infrastructure and the training of specialized personnel, have created a favorable environment for businesses in Pohang, attracting companies and contributing to local job creation and economic revitalization.


Nineteen companies housed at the main Nano Convergence Technology Institute and five companies, including the Apple Manufacturing R&D Support Center at the Advanced Technology Commercialization Center, have been recognized for their outstanding technological capabilities on the global stage.


For the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Testbed Center, scheduled for completion in 2026, more than ten companies from across the country have already submitted letters of intent to move in.


Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "I congratulate the Nano Convergence Technology Institute on its 20th anniversary as a core hub for the development of Korea's nano and semiconductor industries," adding, "We will work together to secure nano technology preemptively, enabling Pohang to leap forward as a leading city in the future of nano industries and to secure a global technological edge in advanced industries."
