Constitutional Challenge to Abolish Game Pre-Censorship Surpasses 100,000 Petitioners in One Day

"Strict Only on Games... The Same Review Standards Should Apply to Other Content"

Constitutional Challenge to Abolish Game Pre-Censorship Surpasses 100,000 Petitioners in One Day

More than 100,000 people have expressed their intention to participate as petitioners in the constitutional appeal being prepared to abolish pre-censorship of games.

The Korea Game Users Association announced on the 6th, "The number of petitioners recruited together with the YouTube channel 'Kim Seonghoe's G Encyclopedia' surpassed 100,000 within 22 hours of the start of recruitment."

Earlier, popular game YouTuber Kim Seonghoe announced on his YouTube channel the day before that "a constitutional appeal trial will be conducted regarding Article 32, Paragraph 2, Subparagraph 3 of the Game Industry Act," and began recruiting petitioners through an electronic signature platform.

The provision states, "In the case of games that excessively depict crime, violence, obscenity, etc., which may incite criminal psychology or imitation psychology and thus disrupt social order, production or import shall be prohibited." Based on this provision, there have been controversies as adult-targeted games provided through the global game platform 'Steam' have been blocked.

Lee Cheol-woo, a lawyer and president of the Game Users Association, evaluated the large-scale participation in the constitutional appeal petition, saying, "The voices of game users have been expressed that it is unrealistic to apply a particularly strict standard only to games compared to other content." He added, "If this constitutional appeal is accepted, only then will the same review standards as other content be applied to games."

Lawyer Lee said, "We plan to recruit petitioners for the constitutional appeal until the 27th of this month and formally submit the appeal petition to the Constitutional Court in early October."
