Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST, President Lee Geon-woo) held its 20th anniversary ceremony on the 6th, reaffirming its strong determination to grow into a world-class prestigious university.
According to DGIST, President Lee Geon-woo stated in his 20th anniversary speech, “DGIST is a young and dynamic university full of energy, like a youth who has just come of age,” and expressed his ambition, saying, “We will enhance the diversity of our members, create an environment suitable for globalization, and grow into a global university through raising international recognition and branding.”
Yoo Sang-im, Minister of Science and ICT, congratulated DGIST on its 20th anniversary through a video message, saying, “Since its inception as a research institute and the addition of educational functions, DGIST has developed into a world-class university and research institute through the efforts of numerous faculty, staff, and students,” and urged, “Please leap forward as a top-level R&D hub not only in Korea but worldwide.”
Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, DGIST is one of the four major science and technology institutes in Korea, along with KAIST in Daejeon, GIST in Gwangju, and UNIST in Ulsan. Established in 2004 under the 'Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology Act' to contribute to the advancement of national science and technology through collaborative research with local industries, technology transfer, commercialization promotion, and startup support, DGIST began as a national research institute. In 2008, educational functions were added, and it has since grown into a research-oriented university with approximately 1,800 students and 800 faculty and staff members.
