Ministry of Land Selects 3rd Hydrogen City Project... Secures Total Project Budget of 40 Billion KRW
Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province has been selected, along with Ulsan City and Seosan City, for the 3rd phase Hydrogen City Development Project announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
This is the first time a county-level region has been selected, and a total of 40 billion KRW (50% national funding, 50% local funding) will be invested to actively promote the hydrogen city development project centered around the Uljin Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex.
The hydrogen city development project, led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, aims to expand hydrogen infrastructure at the urban level and promote the use of hydrogen in daily life as part of efforts to vitalize the hydrogen economy and achieve carbon neutrality.
Accordingly, Uljin County plans to build hydrogen production facilities and supply the produced hydrogen to hydrogen refueling stations for hydrogen mobility (hydrogen buses and hydrogen passenger cars). They will also install hydrogen fuel cells to supply electricity and heat to companies located in the agro-industrial complex, and gradually replace existing city buses with hydrogen buses.
The county will establish and operate a Hydrogen Integrated Safety Operation Center to monitor the production, storage, transport, and utilization of hydrogen in real time, ensuring the safe operation of the hydrogen city. Within this center, there will be a hydrogen promotion hall, a resident hydrogen experience-based welfare facility (bathhouse), and a specialized education classroom for the hydrogen industry. In addition, a 3 km hydrogen pipeline network will be constructed to connect the hydrogen production facility with the hydrogen refueling station and hydrogen fuel cells.
Based on these project details, Uljin County plans to begin the development of a master plan for the 3rd phase hydrogen city in 2025. Centered around the Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex, the county will work with companies planning hydrogen businesses in Uljin to establish an optimized hydrogen city master plan tailored to local conditions.
County Governor Son Byeongbok stated, "Being the first county-level region selected for the hydrogen city development project reflects the high expectations for the role of the Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex in achieving carbon neutrality and strengthening energy security at the national level. Going forward, we will foster a sustainable hydrogen city and a carbon-neutral city model by utilizing economical and clean hydrogen produced at the Nuclear Hydrogen National Industrial Complex."
