Expansion of No-Smoking Zones Including Daycare Centers
Priority Monitoring and Crackdown in Areas with Frequent Complaints and Reports
Osan City in Gyeonggi Province is utilizing big data analysis to manage no-smoking zones.
This move comes in response to the increase in related complaints and a surge in reports of secondhand smoke exposure following the amendment of the National Health Promotion Act on the 17th, which expanded no-smoking zones to within 30 meters of daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary, middle, and high school boundaries.
Accordingly, the Osan City Public Health Center has calculated priority areas for smoking enforcement by analyzing accumulated smoking complaint data and community health survey smoking rate data since 2018. The city plans to prioritize the deployment of no-smoking guides and enforcement officers in these areas and utilize the analyzed data in operating smoking cessation programs, including designing educational programs.
The city will especially use satellite maps to visualize no-smoking zones, providing accurate information on no-smoking zone boundaries when complaints arise, ensuring effective management.
Go Dong-hoon, Director of the Osan City Public Health Center, stated, "We will actively address issues related to secondhand smoke and no-smoking zone management by effectively utilizing no-smoking zone analysis data and applying it in practice."
