Ministry of Environment Hosts 'Resource Circulation Day' Ceremony
"Waste Emissions Reduced by One-Third in Two Years"
President Choi Juseon: "We Will Lead the Expansion of the Circular Economy"
Samsung Display has been selected as a leading company in the circular economy by the government. Under the slogan "Turning Glass Back into Sand," the company was recognized for recycling waste glass and other materials, reducing waste emissions by 33% over two years.
Samsung Display announced on the 6th that its Asan 1 Campus was awarded the highest honor, the Presidential Award, as a "Leading Company in the Circular Economy and Outstanding Performance Workplace" at the Ministry of Environment's "Resource Circulation Day" ceremony. The Leading Company in the Circular Economy award is given to companies that contribute to a circular economy society by reducing waste generated during product manufacturing and promoting recycling.
Samsung Display has recycled process materials to protect irreplaceable resources such as sand and water. They created the slogan "Turning Glass Back into Sand" and have been recycling waste glass generated in the manufacturing process into raw materials for glass fibers, paving blocks, and more. Notably, for the construction of the new office building "SDR," scheduled to open this year, they used about 20,000 tons of cement recycled with waste glass as a secondary raw material. This amount corresponds to approximately 34% of the cement required for the new building construction.
They also achieved results in waste reduction and treatment processes. The amount of waste generated at the Asan 1 Campus last year decreased by about 17% compared to the previous year and by 33% compared to two years ago. The recycling rate has steadily increased to 98.3%. Samsung Display plans to achieve a waste recycling rate of 99.9% by 2030.
Samsung Display collaborated with partner companies and customers to recycle waste. They developed and are applying a technology to extract silver from waste liquid in cooperation with partners. Instead of incinerating waste organic materials, they send them to external partners to extract rare earth elements. Panel packaging materials are fully collected through a process established in cooperation with customers. The collected packaging materials are crushed and reintegrated 100% into packaging material production.
Choi Ju-seon, President of Samsung Display, said, "Our efforts to establish a circular economy within the display industry have been recognized once again through this award," adding, "We will continue our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and develop low-power technologies to overcome the climate crisis."
Samsung Display announced its "Environmental Management Strategy" in 2022 and is participating in global climate crisis responses by improving process gas treatment efficiency and developing low-power products.
