Enjoy Eight Night Views of Yeonghae on a 1924 Time Machine Ride
What was the night scenery of Yeongdeok like in the 1920s and 1930s?
A night street festival utilizing cultural heritage will be held in Seongnae-ri, Yeonghae-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, in the area of the old Yeonghae Market Street Modern History and Culture Space.
The county announced that the "2024 Yeongdeok Cultural Heritage Night Walk" will take place from October 3 to 5.
The "Yeongdeok Cultural Heritage Night Walk" is an event aimed at re-highlighting the value of Yeongdeok-gun's modern historical and cultural heritage and expanding opportunities for local residents to enjoy culture. Selected through a public contest by the National Heritage Administration, this year marks its third edition.
Hosted by the National Heritage Administration, Gyeongbuk Province, and Yeongdeok-gun, and organized by the Yeongdeok Culture and Tourism Foundation, "2024 Yeongdeok Cultural Heritage Night Walk: Yeonghae 1924, Strolling That Night" will feature 22 programs under the theme of "8 Nights" throughout the modern historical and cultural space of Yeonghae-myeon.
The old Yeonghae Market Street will be transformed into the Yeonghae Modern Folk Village, reviving the bustling streets of Yeonghae from 100 years ago under the subtitle "Yeonghae 1924, Strolling That Night." Local actors and street performers, dressed in period costumes from a century ago, will roam the streets to recreate the atmosphere of the time.
This year's festival theme is "8 Nights," namely Night Scenery (Yagyeong), Night Road (Yaro), Night Tale (Yaseol), Night History (Yasa), Night Painting (Yahwa), Night Market (Yasi), Night Food (Yasik), and Night Stay (Yasuk).
Among them, Night Scenery (Yagyeong) features the modern folk village, the street of dozing streetlights, and arch lighting. Night Road (Yaro) includes rickshaw rides, a modern architecture stamp tour, a period costume street show, and a midnight theater (screening black-and-white films at the Yeonghae Eupseong site). Night History (Yasa) offers the "Yeonghae 1924" themed performance and nighttime alley games. Night Painting (Yahwa) presents exhibitions of cherished items from elders, handwritten letters, patchwork, a life photo studio (a 1920s set installed inside old buildings for concept photo shoots), a media facade video show, and "Draw Yeongdeok" (coloring postcards of Yeonghae modern landmarks). Night Tale (Yaseol) features the Yeonghae circus troupe, a comic talk show, and a children's puppet show. Night Stay (Yasuk), where you can spend a night at a cultural heritage site, will be held at the Gwaesi Folk Village, Inryang Village, and Wongu Traditional Village, all designated as National Folk Cultural Heritage sites. In addition, Night Food (Yasik) offers dishes made with mothers' special touch, and Night Market (Yasi) features a flea market.
This year, the "Yeongdeok Cultural Heritage Night Walk" will operate from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. During the festival, in addition to the main performances, a variety of exhibitions, hands-on experiences, and cultural and artistic performances will take place.
A Yeongdeok-gun official said, "Last year's 'Yeongdeok Cultural Heritage Night Walk' brought vitality and inspiration to the alleys of a depopulating area where the streets usually empty out after sunset. About 20,000 people enjoyed modern culture at night, but the frequent rain was regrettable. This year, we moved the event to October, so we expect a more pleasant and beautiful autumn night."
They also added, "We hope that this 'Yeongdeok Cultural Heritage Night Walk' will be an opportunity for modern cultural heritage to transform into a cultural space for residents at night, and that the event will widely promote the charm of Yeonghae-myeon as a walkable destination."
The 2024 Yeongdeok Cultural Heritage Night Walk will be held from October 3 to 5 at the old Yeonghae Market Street Modern History and Culture Space (Seongnae-ri, Yeonghae-myeon).
