Pukyong National University Undergraduate Draws Attention with Three Papers Published in Top 10% SCI Journals

Seong Youngho from Biomedical Engineering and IT Convergence Major Also Selected for National Research Foundation Research Grant Program

Seong Youngho, a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in Biomedical Engineering and IT Convergence at Pukyong National University (President: Jang Youngsoo), has drawn attention by publishing three research papers as the first author in top 10% SCI-level international journals.

Seong Youngho, a member of the Biomedical Ultrasound Research Laboratory led by Professor Lim Haegyun in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Pukyong National University, published papers in the latest issues of three journals: a Nature partner journal (IF 10.4, JCR 1.6% in Water Resources), (IF 5.4, JCR 9.5% in Geosciences, Multidisciplinary), and (IF 4.9, JCR 10% in Mineralogy).

All three journals are ranked in the top 10% according to the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), and in particular, 'npj Clean Water', a Nature partner journal, is recognized internationally for its authority in the latest research on water quality improvement and purification technologies.

Seong Youngho has conducted professional research in the field of ultrasound, including the combination of ultrasound-based acoustic measurement and artificial intelligence, analysis and prediction of soil properties using ultrasound reflection signals, and nondestructive monitoring utilizing ultrasound, receiving high evaluations for his work.

While it is not uncommon for undergraduates to publish papers in international journals as co-authors with graduate students, it is rare for an undergraduate to independently determine the research direction, conduct research with an advising professor, and publish multiple papers in SCI-level journals simultaneously.

Since his sophomore year, Seong Youngho has participated in research through an integrated bachelor’s and master’s program, supported by projects such as the 4th Stage BK21 Project-New Senior Customized Smart Healthcare Group, the National Research Foundation of Korea Excellent Young Researcher Support Program, the Regional Innovation Leading Research Center (RLRC)-Active Senior Healthcare Translational Research Center based on Smart Gym, and the Excellent Researcher Exchange Support Program (BrainLink)-International Joint Research Group for Quantum Bio-Converged Nanophotonics.

Recently, he was selected for the 2024 Fall Semester Graduate Student Research Encouragement Grant Program supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea, with the topic 'Development of a Noninvasive Wearable Ultrasound Diagnosis and Treatment Integrated System for Infertility Solutions', and will receive 12 million KRW in research funding over one year to conduct research on ultrasound-based infertility diagnosis and treatment.
