Eunpyeong-gu Selected as Final 'Environmental Education City' Designated by Ministry of Environment

"Activate Resident-Practice Environmental Education"

Eunpyeong-gu Selected as Final 'Environmental Education City' Designated by Ministry of Environment Eunpyeong District Office building.

Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced on the 3rd that it has been selected as a ‘2024 Environmental Education City’ designated by the Ministry of Environment.

An Environmental Education City is a system in which the Ministry of Environment designates local governments with excellent environmental education promotion foundations among metropolitan and basic local governments to realize region-based carbon neutrality.

The evaluation focused on ▲environmental education promotion foundation ▲environmental education achievements ▲excellence of environmental education plans. Evaluation committee members, consisting of experts in education, environmental education, and environmental administration, made the final decision through document and on-site evaluations at the Environmental Education Committee.

The selected local governments this time include two metropolitan areas: Chungcheongbuk-do and Chungcheongnam-do, and four basic local governments: Eunpyeong-gu, Seodaemun-gu, Yangpyeong-gun, and Gimhae-si.

Eunpyeong-gu conducted environmental education in daily life with local residents such as schools and commercial districts through the ‘Carbon Neutral Pilot Street Creation’ project. It was highly evaluated for its excellent plan to realize resident-participatory environmental learning rights linked with universities, as it was already designated as a lifelong learning city. In addition, the strong will of the local government head to realize carbon neutrality through the operation of the Environmental Education City reportedly earned high scores.

From January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027, the designation period, Eunpyeong-gu is expected to receive expert consultations from the Ministry of Environment and opportunities for mutual cooperation among Environmental Education Cities to develop as a model for revitalizing community-led environmental education.

Mayor Kim Mi-kyung said, “This designation as an Environmental Education City is recognition and encouragement for our Eunpyeong residents who have worked hard on environmental education and carbon neutrality practices,” and added, “We will further activate resident-practice-oriented environmental education to realize carbon-neutral Eunpyeong.”
