Expanding the Pansori Horizon with Awareness of Gender Equality
Singer Lee Jaram will receive the 'Gender Equality Culture Award of the Year.'
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced fourteen winners across six categories, including the Minister's Award and the Chairperson of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee Award, on the 2nd. The Gender Equality Culture Award of the Year is given to individuals and organizations who have contributed to spreading awareness of gender equality through culture.
Lee Jaram was recognized for expanding the horizons of pansori by incorporating gender equality awareness and a new worldview into traditional pansori culture. Representative works include 'Sunsin' and 'Eokcheokga.' The former highlights the presence of a mother in the heroic tale of General Yi Sunsin, while the latter is a newly adapted version of Brecht's play 'Mother Courage and Her Children.'
The 'Gender Equality Culture Support Award' was given to the theater company Shinsesgae and literary critic Kim Miok. Shinsesgae was acknowledged for staging works that candidly reveal violent and discriminatory realities. A Ministry of Culture official explained, "They have spread gender equality culture and values throughout our society and the arts." Kim Miok received high praise for numerous literary reviews written from a gender equality perspective.
The winner of the 'Gender Equality Cultural Content Award of the Year' was 'Modern and Contemporary Korean Embroidery Exhibition: Birds Trying to Catch the Sun.' The work was highly evaluated for reexamining the artistic value of embroidery, which had been regarded as a women's pastime in traditional Korean inner chambers.
The awards ceremony will be held on the 6th at Ferrum Hall, Ferrum Tower, Jung-gu, Seoul.
