A sad story has emerged about a dog in Brazil who has been waiting for its owner at the hospital where the owner passed away for eight years.

According to foreign media such as EPTV and G1 on the 1st (local time), a dog named 'Caramelu' has been staying at Santa Casa de Guariba General Hospital in S?o Paulo state for eight years.

Caramelu began visiting the hospital every day right after the owner, who was admitted to the hospital in 2016, passed away. The owner's family tried several times to take Caramelu home, but each time Caramelu returned to the hospital.

Leticia Danchi, a hospital billing staff member, told local media, "Caramelu escaped from the deceased's children's house several times," adding, "Eventually, the deceased's children gave up and decided to leave Caramelu at the hospital." The hospital also decided through a meeting to take care of Caramelu themselves.

Adopted by the hospital, Caramelu has become the hospital's mascot, receiving food, water, and lots of affection from staff and visitors. Caramelu was also trained by the staff about areas inside the hospital that are off-limits and other precautions. The hospital stated, "The staff are taking every precaution to ensure Caramelu is always around the hospital premises outside the building doors."

Caramelu barks when an ambulance arrives, alerting the arrival of new patients. The media added that patients inside the hospital have become so accustomed to this that Caramelu has secured a 'fandom.' Local netizens showed support for Caramelu with comments such as "The purest love I've ever seen" and "Dogs also overcome grief with a different kind of love."
