Expansion of Red Road R9 Sidewalk and Installation of Modular Flooring for Halloween and Year-End Safety
Maintenance of Aged Sidewalks on Hongdae Red Road R10 from Sangsu Station to Tojeong-ro to Improve Accessibility to the Han River
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) is undertaking a major renovation to prevent safety accidents on Hongdae Red Road R9 and R10 and to create a tourism-friendly street.
The renovation targets a total length of 880m, covering R9, which extends from Jandari-ro to Wausan-ro and Sangsu Station, and R10, which connects Sangsu Station to Wausan-ro and Tojeong-ro.
The section of Red Road R9 from Jandari-ro to Wausan-ro to Sangsu Station is known as the "Club Street," a densely crowded area with many people gathering on weekends and during the year-end and New Year holidays. Accordingly, Mapo-gu plans to expand the existing 3.1~3.5m sidewalks on Jandari-ro to 4.1~4.4m to prevent crowding and traffic accidents and to enhance pedestrian convenience.
Additionally, the section from Wausan-ro to Sangsu Station will be paved with a coating-type flooring material to improve visibility and prevent slip accidents.
The section of Red Road R10 from Sangsu Station to Tojeong-ro will focus on renovating the severely deteriorated sidewalks to create a safe and pleasant walking environment and improve accessibility to the Han River.
To create a Hongdae Red Road where everyone can feel safe and enjoy, Mapo-gu established the project plan in May 2023 and carried out preliminary procedures such as gathering residents' opinions and cooperating with institutions managing obstacles. Subsequently, in July 2024, a supplementary budget of 400 million KRW was secured for the renovation of R9 and R10.
Mapo-gu plans to begin full-scale construction in September and aims to complete the renovation as soon as possible to fully prevent safety accidents during the upcoming Halloween Day and year-end and New Year holidays.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “After managing safety during last Halloween Day and the year-end holidays, I saw large crowds gathering on Jandari-ro and other parts of Hongdae Red Road, which made me realize the urgency of improving the pedestrian environment. We will continue to carefully monitor and improve roads in the area to ensure a safe Mapo without accidents.”
