Emergency Medical Association and Jeonui Gyohyeop Statement on the 1st: "Accountability for Responsible Parties Needed"
Amid growing social anxiety over the emergency medical crisis ahead of Chuseok, emergency medicine doctors and medical school professors have demanded that the government strictly hold accountable those responsible for triggering the current situation.
The Korean Society of Emergency Medicine and the National Council of Medical School Professors jointly issued a statement on the 1st, pointing out, "Despite the looming major crisis in emergency medical care ahead of Chuseok, the government is deceiving the public by claiming that everything is normal as long as the doors are open."
They stated, "As the government’s irresponsible policy enforcement has extended beyond six months, emergency rooms nationwide are collapsing," and criticized, "While the frontline is in a life-or-death crisis, the president is firmly denying any problems and insists that there is no crisis."
They added, “The inappropriate and superficial emergency room crisis management measures, which deny the current emergency room crisis, will only worsen the situation,” expressing concern, "Can patients be treated in the current situation just by forcibly keeping emergency room doors open?" They further noted, "If 119 emergency services forcibly admit patients to hospitals where surgery is impossible, there may be no repeated transfers, but patients will die."
They continued, "The current emergency room situation is very serious and is clearly expected to worsen," urging, "The government must hold those responsible accountable and correct misguided policies to prevent further harm to the public and medical staff caused by foolish policy proliferation."
