Average Nationwide Temperature 28°C from 1st to 30th
Heatwave Warning Lifted in Daejeon and Sejong After 42 Days
On the last day of August, the heatwave warning in Seoul was lifted after about a month.
As of 5 p.m. on the 31st, heatwave warnings across the country, including Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, and Sejong, were either lifted or downgraded from warnings to advisories.
Seoul and Incheon (excluding Ongjin County) had heatwave advisories issued on July 24, and the warnings were lifted after 38 days. In Daejeon and Sejong, the heatwave advisories issued on July 20 were lifted after 42 days.
Out of 183 meteorological warning zones nationwide, 95 still have heatwave warnings in effect. There are no heatwave alerts, only heatwave advisories.
The heat will not disappear all at once, but as temperatures gradually return to average levels, the heatwave will slowly subside.
On Sunday, September 1, the perceived temperature in the southern regions is expected to rise to around 33 degrees Celsius, but compared to that day, the perceived temperature is expected to drop by 1 to 2 degrees.
The morning low temperature will be between 19 and 25 degrees Celsius, and the daytime high will be between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius.
On September 2, due to the influence of a pressure trough, occasional rain is expected in the central regions from early morning to afternoon. On the 3rd, rain will fall in the afternoon on the Jeonbuk west coast and the Gyeongbuk east coast, and late at night on the Gyeongnam coast.
The expected low and high temperatures on September 2 are 19 to 25 degrees Celsius and 26 to 33 degrees Celsius, respectively.
August this year is expected to be remembered as a "record-breaking hot month." The nationwide average temperature from August 1 to 30 was 28 degrees Celsius, which is the highest for the same period since 1973, when the meteorological observation network was expanded nationwide. It is 0.8 degrees higher than 2018, which was known as the "worst heatwave of the 21st century" (27.2 degrees Celsius).
The average daily maximum temperature (33.0 degrees Celsius) and average daily minimum temperature (24.2 degrees Celsius) are also the highest on record.
From the beginning of this year until the 30th of this month, the nationwide average number of heatwave days (days with a daily maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius or higher) was 23.8 days, ranking second all-time after 1994 (29.6 days), and the number of tropical nights (nights with a minimum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius or higher) was 20.2 days, the highest on record.
