A man in his 20s died in an accident while playing in the water with his girlfriend at a beach in Gangneung, Gangwon Province.

According to the Sokcho Coast Guard and Gangwon Fire Headquarters, at 4:01 PM on the 28th, a report was received that "someone seems to have fallen into the sea" at Sodol Beach located in Jumunjin-eup, Gangneung City.

The Coast Guard, dispatched to the scene, rescued a man identified as A (24) about 250 meters from the beach. Subsequently, the 119 rescue team arrived upon the Coast Guard's request and administered emergency treatment. A, who was in cardiac arrest at the time, was transported to a nearby hospital but ultimately passed away.

It was confirmed that A was swept away by waves while moving closer to push his girlfriend's tube after she moved toward the sea during their water play. A was reportedly not wearing a tube or life jacket. Sodol Beach, where the accident occurred, is not designated as an official swimming beach and is understood to be an undesignated beach without safety personnel or rescue equipment. The Coast Guard is currently investigating the exact cause of the accident.
