It has been revealed that fans of singer Kim Ho-joong, who is accused of hit-and-run while driving under the influence, sent letters to U.S. presidential candidates.
On the 29th, a fan of Kim Ho-joong posted on the official fan cafe, stating, "We sent emails urging the release of Byeolnim (Kim Ho-joong) to the U.S. presidential candidates." The author said, "We sent an English letter titled 'Urgent Appeal for the Release of the World-Class Vocalist Kim Ho-joong,'" and added, "I am writing because I am worried about Kim Ho-joong's recent situation."
He reportedly wrote in the email, "Kim Ho-joong has become a symbol of hope and harmony through his outstanding talent," and "His contributions to art and culture are valuable not only in Korea but also globally." He also added, "Considering the strong and lasting alliance between the U.S. and Korea, I believe Kim Ho-joong's release will strengthen bilateral relations and play an important role in maintaining peace and harmony on a global scale," and "His freedom will be a strong testament to the values of justice and human dignity that we share." The post has since been confirmed deleted.
Earlier, when it became known that a so-called 'Kim Ho-joong Prevention Act' was to be proposed in the National Assembly, Kim Ho-joong's fans left numerous malicious comments on related lawmakers and launched campaigns to defeat them, causing controversy. In response, the fan cafe operator expressed concern, saying, "Such sudden actions could harm the singer, so please refrain from further agitation," and "Please exercise restraint until the trial ends and follow the announcements."
Meanwhile, Kim Ho-joong is accused of driving under the influence and hitting a taxi on the opposite side of the road in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, around 11:40 p.m. on May 9, then fleeing the scene. At that time, he was found to have coerced his manager to falsely surrender and made false statements, drawing public criticism. Officials from his agency were also indicted on charges including evidence tampering for removing the black box storage device from the accident vehicle. Kim Ho-joong admitted to all charges at the second trial held on the 19th and requested bail two days later on the 21st. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for the 30th of next month.
