Police Investigating Teenager A
A high school student who distributed so-called 'deepfake pornography'?nude photos with the faces of female high school teachers digitally superimposed?on social networking services (SNS) has been apprehended by the police. On the 29th, Yonhap News reported that the Namdong Police Station in Incheon is investigating a teenage high school student, identified as A, on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
Mr. A is accused of using deepfake technology, a type of artificial intelligence (AI), last month to superimpose the faces of two female high school teachers onto nude photos and distributing them on SNS. After receiving complaints from the two victim teachers, the police conducted an investigation and identified Mr. A as the creator and distributor of the sexual crime materials.
The police believe Mr. A used Telegram, a closed SNS platform, to distribute the sexual crime materials, and are currently investigating the detailed circumstances of the crime through digital forensics. Once the forensic work is completed, the police plan to summon Mr. A for further questioning and verify whether there are additional victims.
Meanwhile, concerns among citizens have grown as numerous cases of pornography distribution using deepfake technology have recently been detected. Many cases have been found where images of acquaintances were synthesized and distributed within specific regions and schools. According to the National Police Agency's statistics, the number of deepfake-related crimes nearly doubled, increasing from 156 cases in 2021 to 297 cases as of last month.
