All Elementary Students in Jeonnam Receive 100,000 Won Monthly... Education Allowance Provided

Measures for Gradual Payment Plan for Middle and High School Students

From next year, all elementary school students in Jeonnam Province will receive an education allowance of 100,000 KRW per month.

The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on the 28th that it has completed social security consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare to provide the "Jeonnam Student Education Allowance" of 100,000 KRW per month to all elementary school students across all 22 cities and counties in the province.

Since March, the Jeonnam Student Education Allowance has been paid differentially: 100,000 KRW per student per month to elementary students in 16 counties designated as population decline areas (excluding Muan-gun) among the 22 cities and counties in the province, and 50,000 KRW per month to elementary students in the 5 city areas and Muan-gun.

Starting next year, regardless of region, all elementary students in the 22 cities and counties will receive the same monthly allowance of 100,000 KRW. The office plans to gradually establish payment plans for middle and high school students in consultation with basic local governments.

The student education allowance, a key pledge of Superintendent Kim Dae-jung, was temporarily provided for one year due to government opposition under universal welfare policies. The provincial office of education allocated 52.1 billion KRW for student allowances this year and plans to budget 77.5 billion KRW for next year.

Superintendent Kim Dae-jung stated, "The expansion of the student education allowance was made possible thanks to the support of the provincial council, the educational community, and residents. We will do our best to ensure equal educational opportunities regardless of where students live in Jeonnam and to support them in fully realizing their dreams."
