Team Leader Lewis Selected for Match Against Europe
Clash on September 13 in Gainesville, Virginia, USA
Record: USA Leads with 10 Wins, 1 Draw, 7 Losses
Lexi Thompson (USA) will participate in the Solheim Cup, the golf competition against Europe.
U.S. captain Stacy Lewis selected Thompson as a captain's pick along with Jennifer Kupcho and Sarah Schmelzel on the 27th (local time). Thompson first played in the Solheim Cup in 2013 at the age of 18. This will be her 7th consecutive appearance. She will retire from the U.S. Women's Professional Golf (LPGA) Tour at the end of this season. Captain Lewis said, "Considering her experience, choosing Thompson as a captain's pick was the easiest decision," adding, "I know well what Thompson can do in the Solheim Cup."
The U.S. team is led by world No. 1 Nelly Korda and No. 2 Lilia Vu. The 12-member U.S. team will face the European Union over three days starting September 13 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. In their head-to-head record, the U.S. leads with 10 wins, 1 draw, and 7 losses. However, the U.S. has not beaten Europe since the 2019 tournament, and last year’s event in Spain ended in a tie, leaving the trophy with Europe.
Europe, led by Suzann Pettersen (Norway), announced captain's picks including Georgia Hall (England) the day before. They will field players such as C?line Boutier (France), Leona Maguire (Ireland), Charley Hull (England), Carlota Ciganda (Spain), and Maja Stark (Sweden) to compete against the U.S.
