Taiwan Imposes This Entry Ban for the Second Time This Year
A Chinese singer who referred to Taiwan as 'China Taipei' has been banned from entering Taiwan ahead of a scheduled performance.
On the 26th, multiple local media outlets including Liberty Times and Taiwanese press reported that Chinese hip-hop artist Wang Yitai's promotional image for his album stated, "Next performance location: China Taipei."
In response, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), the agency responsible for China-related affairs, banned Wang Yitai from entering Taiwan, where he was scheduled to hold the 'Love Me Later' concert on the 14th of next month.
The MAC announced that Wang Yitai's promotional content violated the "Regulations Governing the Permission of Mainland Area People's Entry into the Taiwan Area," and after consultations with relevant departments, the singer's entry was denied in accordance with the law.
Furthermore, the Taiwanese event organizer reportedly began selling tickets for the concert from the 1st of last month without prior approval from the authorities. They also submitted event-related documents on the 10th of the same month, emphasizing that the authorities are not obligated to grant approval.
It was particularly pointed out that Chinese entertainers must not demean Taiwan's status or deliberately undermine Taiwan's national dignity during performances in Taiwan, in accordance with the principle of equality and dignity.
Chinese entertainment news reported that this is the second time this year that the MAC has canceled a mainland singer's performance in Taiwan for similar reasons. Previously, in April, the Chinese band 'Huichundan,' invited to a Taiwanese festival music event, had their performance canceled the day before after posting the phrase "China Taiwan." According to reports, the MAC stated that this was because it belittled Taiwan's status and emphasized that cross-strait exchanges must be conducted "mutually and with dignity."
Meanwhile, tickets for Wang Yitai's Taiwan concert sold out on the first day of release, and additional performances are reportedly being planned.
