Yeosu City to Support 'Island Residents' Accommodation Fees' When Passenger Ships Are Canceled

Samsan-myeon, Nam-myeon (Year) Residents Targeted

Up to 80,000 KRW Per Person Annually Provided

Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it is providing accommodation expenses support for island residents who are stranded on the mainland due to passenger ferry cancellations caused by bad weather.

According to the city on the 26th, since May, as part of welfare policies for residents of remote islands, the city has been piloting the "2024 Passenger Ferry Use Island Residents Accommodation Expense Support Project" to alleviate the burden of accommodation costs on the mainland due to weather conditions.

The support targets residents living in Samsan-myeon and Nam-myeon (Yeondo), who must have been registered residents for at least six months.

The support amount is up to 40,000 KRW per day, with an annual payment limit of 80,000 KRW.

To claim, applicants must submit an application form, accommodation receipt, and passenger ferry ticket to their local township office within 10 days after the accommodation.

However, the program may close early if the budget is exhausted, and if any fraudulent claims such as document forgery are discovered, support will be suspended for one year and the paid support funds will be reclaimed.

A city official stated, "This pilot project was launched this year to reduce the economic burden on residents who must stay on the mainland when passenger ferries are canceled. We will focus on promoting the program so that many island residents can benefit, and we will continue to strive to improve living conditions and welfare for island residents."
