"Daughter-in-law Wearing Leggings That Fit Perfectly for the Holiday, Face Flushed"
With Chuseok just three weeks away, stories from mothers-in-law feeling uncomfortable about daughters-in-law wearing clothes that fit too closely for the holiday are drawing attention.
On the 24th, MBN's broadcast of 'Sokpuli Show Dongchimi' shared candid thoughts from mothers-in-law about their daughters-in-law's attire. Culinary expert Kang Soon-ui said in response to the host's question, "Do you like your daughter-in-law's clothing?" that "young daughters-in-law all dress in a similar way," adding, "In our home, daughters-in-law come over during holidays or ancestral rites wearing tight stockings-like pants that reveal the shape of their underwear." The panel in the studio explained that the clothing in question was "leggings."
Chef Kang continued, "I'm okay with them wearing clothes that show (the shape of their underwear), but there's the father-in-law, right?" and lamented, "When they walk back and forth in front of him, my face gets all flushed." Other participants who heard this also empathized, saying, "There’s a father-in-law, so that shouldn’t happen."
Fortune teller Ko Chun-ja shared a similar story. She said, "The daughter-in-law wears very short skirts that reveal everything," and added, "I don't understand why jeans are worn ripped." Regarding her first meeting with her daughter-in-law, she said, "She came wearing something too short," and recalled, "I called her over saying, 'Let me see for a moment,' and told her to greet me wearing loose pants. Having grown up in a household with five generations living together, I heard a lot that 'a woman shouldn't show her body.'" She continued, "While it's fine to wear what you want when traveling or going out, I tell my daughter-in-law to dress properly in daily life."
Meanwhile, as more people enjoy wearing leggings as everyday wear, there are criticisms that tight-fitting leggings can be embarrassing to see. Recently, an elementary school female teacher wore leggings at a sports day event, sparking online debate. At the time, one netizen pointed out, "There are children around, so wearing tight-fitting leggings is inappropriate." On the other hand, another netizen responded, "Leggings are comfortable for exercising," and said, "What clothes someone wears is a personal freedom." Previously, in 2017, a teenage girl was controversially denied boarding an airplane because she was wearing leggings.
