Alien Tops for 2nd Week
'Sarang-ui Hatchuping' Surpasses Break-Even Point
The Hollywood sci-fi film 'Alien: Romulus' has held the top spot at the box office for two consecutive weeks.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network on the 26th, over the past weekend (23rd-25th), 'Alien: Romulus' (directed by Fede Alvarez) attracted 342,442 viewers, securing the number one position at the box office. Its revenue share was 28.6%. Since its release on the 14th, the film has recorded a cumulative audience of 1,242,478.
In mid-August, a battleground for summer new releases with dozens of films opening, 'Alien: Romulus' has maintained its number one spot and continued its box office success. The film is the seventh sequel to the iconic sci-fi horror movie 'Alien' (1979) and the first sequel in four years since 'Alien 4' (1998). It depicts the story of young people who left the colony and arrive at the abandoned space station Romulus, where they face attacks from aliens.
The comedy film 'Pilot' starring Jo Jung-suk (directed by Kim Han-gyeol) drew 214,657 viewers, ranking second. Its cumulative audience is 4,253,082. 'Neulbom Garden' (directed by Koo Tae-jin), released on the 21st, entered the charts at third place with 149,470 viewers. A total of 204,654 people have watched the film.
In fourth place is the domestic animation 'Sarang-ui Hatchuping,' which attracted 93,268 viewers. The film has surpassed its break-even point (700,000 viewers) with a cumulative audience of 790,496, ranking as the fifth highest-grossing animation released this year, following 'Inside Out 2,' 'Kung Fu Panda 4,' 'Despicable Me 4,' and 'Wish.'
Fifth place went to the Hollywood disaster blockbuster 'Twisters' (91,470 viewers), sixth to 'Land of Happiness' starring Jo Jung-suk and Lee Sun-kyun (84,780 viewers), and seventh to 'Victory' starring Lee Hye-ri (54,395 viewers). 'Desperate Pursuit,' starring Park Sung-woong and released on the 21st, started at eighth place with 45,120 viewers.
The total number of moviegoers over the weekend was 1,242,523. The concert film of singer Lim Young-woong, 'Lim Young-woong│I'm Hero The Stadium,' which opens two days later, is leading real-time reservation rates at 39.7% as of that morning. The real-time reserved audience reached 121,758. Some special screenings, including IMAX on the opening day, the 28th, were sold out. Second place is 'Veteran 2' (11.4%).
