Japanese Female Announcer Kawaguchi Yuri
Contract Termination Despite Apology... Controversy Over Gender Discrimination
A Japanese female announcer was fired after making a statement that "men's body odor is unpleasant." The incident escalated into a gender discrimination controversy.
Recently, Japanese media outlets such as Modelpress and FNN reported on freelance announcer Kawaguchi Yuri (29), who expressed dissatisfaction on social networking services (SNS) about men's hygiene in summer. She wrote on X, "There may be personal circumstances, but the smell and unhygienic body odor of men in summer is very unpleasant," adding, "I shower several times a day, use clean wet wipes, and apply antiperspirant all year round for cleanliness. More men should do this." Kawaguchi also worked as an instructor for sexual harassment prevention and bullying prevention education. She was active as a feminist announcer.
The post sparked a gender discrimination controversy. Critics argued, "Body odor is something everyone has, so limiting it to men is clear discrimination." Others said, "She is a materialistic woman detached from the difficulties ordinary people face," or "It's natural to sweat and smell when working outdoors in such hot weather. Does she not understand the situation because she works in a cool place?"
As the controversy spread, Kawaguchi deleted the post and issued an apology, stating, "Many people were hurt by my careless remarks. I deeply reflect on this," and "I will strive to ensure my words do not hurt anyone in the future." Nevertheless, Kawaguchi's agency notified her of contract termination, citing 'defamation of men's honor.' The company that hired her as a sexual harassment prevention education instructor also terminated their contract.
After losing her livelihood, support for her rapidly increased. Comments included, "Why are Japanese men so sensitive? They cannot accept even slight criticism," and "Male Japanese broadcasters often make even harsher remarks, but a female broadcaster losing her job over this level of comment shows a tilted playing field."
In a recent appearance on a YouTube channel, she said, "I lost about 6 kg due to mental distress after the controversy," and added, "Since my contract was terminated, I have received many offers for performances. Especially, I have received many supportive messages from women."
