"Emotional Korean School Song at Japanese Baseball Stadium"
Cheering Message with Jeonnam Residents
Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, sent a congratulatory message to Kyoto International High School, which won the All-Japan High School Baseball Championship for the first time on the 23rd.
Kyoto International High School won 2-1 in an extra-inning battle against Kanto Daiichi High School, representing Tokyo, in the final of the Summer Koshien tournament held at Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture on the 23rd.
In the game, Kyoto International High School players were seen singing their Korean school anthem starting with "Across the East Sea, Yamato land is the sacred dreamland of our ancestors" immediately after their victory, which was broadcast live nationwide in Japan through the public broadcaster NHK.
Kyoto International High School began as Kyoto Chosen Central School, established in 1947 by Korean residents in Japan who voluntarily raised funds for ethnic education. It was approved by the Korean government in 1958 and officially recognized by the Japanese government in 2003, when it was renamed Kyoto International High School.
The Kyoto International High School baseball team first appeared in the Summer Koshien tournament in 2021, and this year achieved the historic feat of reaching the final and winning the championship for the first time.
Governor Kim Young-rok said, "The Korean school anthem resonating in the Japanese baseball stadium amid the glory of victory deeply moved and empowered all the people of the Republic of Korea across the sea," adding, "Together with all the residents of Jeollanam-do, I will cheer for even greater achievements building on this victory."
