Main Proposal for Partial Amendment of the Ordinance on the Operation and Support of the Yu Gwansun Award
It appears that overseas Koreans will also be eligible to receive the Yu Gwansun Award, the highest honor for women in Korea.
According to the Chungnam Provincial Council on the 23rd, Shin Sunok, a council member from the People Power Party (proportional representation), recently proposed a partial amendment to the "Ordinance on the Operation and Support of the Yu Gwansun Award."
Since 2002, Chungnam Province has been presenting the Yu Gwansun Award to women and women's organizations who have contributed to the nation and society, in commemoration of the patriotic spirit of Yu Gwansun. However, overseas Koreans have been excluded from eligibility.
Shin and 39 other council members proposed a partial amendment to the ordinance that would add overseas Koreans to the list of eligible recipients. The amendment also includes expanding the number of members on the judging committee from the current 5-9 to 9-15.
This ordinance amendment is scheduled to be reviewed at the 355th temporary session, which will begin on the 27th.
Shin stated, "We decided to pursue this amendment to embody the noble patriotic spirit of Yu Gwansun, who led the struggle for national independence, in our lives today," adding, "By easing the nationality restrictions for recipients, we hope to enhance the international status of the Yu Gwansun Award and contribute to raising the pride of overseas Koreans."
