KCSC "Strong Response to Deepfake Sexual Crimes in University Areas"

Commencement of Focused Monitoring on Problematic SNS

KCSC "Strong Response to Deepfake Sexual Crimes in University Areas"

The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) announced on the 22nd that it will take strong action against deepfake sexual false videos rapidly spreading mainly in group chat rooms around some university campuses.

The KCSC pointed out that perpetrators are illegally synthesizing victims' likenesses into obscene videos and sharing them in SNS group chat rooms, causing the scope of harm to gradually widen. They also warned that this method could rapidly spread to elementary, middle, and high schools.

The KCSC will immediately begin focused monitoring of the relevant SNS platforms, utilize electronic deliberations held daily to request correction of sexual false videos within 24 hours, and take a three-step approach including referring information on malicious distributors identified during monitoring to investigative authorities.

The KCSC urged internet users to actively report to the commission, emphasizing that "initial response" is crucial because digital sex crime information spreads rapidly through infinite replication and distribution.

Meanwhile, the KCSC decided on a total of 7,187 correction requests for sexual false videos last year. This year, as of the end of last month, the number of correction requests reached 6,434, about 90% of the previous year’s total, clearly indicating signs of the spread of sexual false videos.
