Dong-Eui University Holds Welcome Ceremony for Olympic Gold Medalists Koo Bongil and Do Kyungdong

Members Cheer During Visit to Alma Mater

Dong-Eui University (President Han Suhwan) held a welcoming ceremony for alumni Gu Bon-gil and Do Kyung-dong, who led the men's sabre fencing team to their third consecutive victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics, on the first floor lobby of the university's main building on the 19th.

Although the lobby of the main building, where the event was held, was as hot as a sauna due to the lack of air conditioning, students and staff formed long lines even before the event began to see Gu Bon-gil and Do Kyung-dong, who were visiting their alma mater after a long time.

Around 2 p.m., when Gu Bon-gil and Do Kyung-dong entered the building, cheers erupted and everyone began taking photos with their phones. Even the administrative staff paused their work to come to the lobby and offer their congratulations. During the autograph and selfie session that followed, the lobby was packed with students and staff, making it feel like a celebrity fan meeting event.

After receiving bouquets from their fencing team juniors, Gu Bon-gil and Do Kyung-dong said, "We are very grateful for the welcome and congratulations from everyone. There is definitely a process at the university behind winning an Olympic gold medal. Even after graduation, we always trained with pride as Dong-Eui alumni, and thanks to that, we were able to achieve good results again this time," expressing their gratitude to the school.

After the welcoming ceremony, Gu Bon-gil and Do Kyung-dong visited the president's office and the chairman's office to thank President Han Suhwan and Chairman Kim Indo of Dong-Eui Academy for their support during their student days and to share vivid stories from the Olympics.

President Han Suhwan said, "Thank you for bringing joy and inspiration to the people and enhancing the university's reputation through the Olympics. We will continue to provide the best possible support so that student athletes can train freely, and I hope you will guide your juniors who are aiming for the national team."

In addition to Gu Bon-gil and Do Kyung-dong, Dong-Eui University had four alumni athletes participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, including Yoon Ji-su, who captained the women's sabre fencing team and won a silver medal in the team event, and Jeon Hyuk-jin, who competed in men's badminton singles.
