"452 Bolts and Nuts Ingested"... Reported by UK Media
Consumed for at Least 3 Months... Symptoms of Abdominal Pain and Vomiting
Known to be in Opium Addiction at the Time
A man was hospitalized after swallowing hundreds of metal objects.
The British media outlet Daily Mail reported on the incident that occurred in Iran on the 19th (local time). A 37-year-old man visited a hospital with symptoms of abdominal pain and vomiting, and examinations revealed that his stomach was filled with metal objects such as screws, keys, and nuts.
A total of 452 metal objects were removed through open abdominal surgery, weighing approximately 2.9 kg. It is estimated that the man had been ingesting these items for at least three months.
The metal objects inside his stomach blocked his digestive tract, causing symptoms like abdominal pain and vomiting. Medical staff concluded that the man was suffering from a mental illness. Although the exact reason why he ate metal was not revealed, it was confirmed that he was addicted to opium at the time.
The man appears to have pica, an eating disorder characterized by the repeated consumption of non-food items. The causes are unclear but are known to be potentially triggered by nutritional deficiencies, extreme anxiety and stress, chronic depression, or drug addiction.
