Fines Up to 2 Million KRW for Violating Evacuation Orders

Typhoon No. 9 'Jongdari' was approaching northward, and a typhoon advisory was issued for the waters around Jeju, but a man in his 20s who ignored the warning and was snorkeling fell into the sea and was rescued.


According to Yonhap News, at around 3:27 PM on the 20th, a report was received by the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters that a man in his 20s, Mr. A, who was snorkeling at Wolryeong Port in Hallim-eup, Jeju City, had fallen into the sea.

Mr. A was rescued by a nearby leisure business official and was complaining of headache and dizziness, so he was transported to a hospital in Jeju City. On that day, Typhoon 'Jongdari' was forecasted to make its closest approach around 5 PM, and a typhoon advisory was in effect for all waters around Jeju Island.


Jeju Island issued a coastal evacuation order starting at 11 AM, completely prohibiting residents, tourists, anglers, and coastal experience participants from accessing rocky shores, breakwaters, fishing port facilities, coastal cliffs, including the Jeju Olle Trail and beaches in the western region of Jeju. Violating evacuation orders during disaster situations such as typhoons results in a fine of up to 2 million KRW according to the Disaster and Safety Management Act.
