Sahmyook Busan Hospital Introduces PDA Smart Technology to Enhance Patient Safety

Establishment of a Smart Patient Identification System Using PDA

Samyook Busan Hospital has introduced the Smart Patient Identification System (Smart CLMA), which utilizes portable devices (PDAs) to enhance patient safety. After undergoing a simulation process, the system began full-scale operation in August.

The Smart Patient Identification System (Smart CLMA) is based on PDAs, allowing real-time execution and verification of patient data. It is integrated with the hospital information system, enabling medical staff to transmit processed data to electronic medical records (EMR) in real time.

Currently, Samyook Busan Hospital’s patient safety management system allows for precise patient identification at admission by using PDAs to scan the QR code on the bracelet provided to each patient. The PDA is equipped with a scanner for QR codes and a separate LCD screen, enabling medical staff to view various patient information in real time.

In particular, accurate patient identification during procedures such as blood sampling and transfusions improves the accuracy of medical care and enhances staff work efficiency. Most importantly, compared to the previous method of verbally or visually confirming the patient’s name and registration number, the system now allows for patient information to be verified electronically, thereby preventing patient safety incidents.

Additionally, the system is expected to further enhance nursing efficiency by allowing vital signs, intake, output, and other records to be measured and entered directly via PDA. Various other work functions will also be applied to the greatest extent possible.

Choi Myungseop, the hospital director, stated, “The introduction of PDAs is an essential and prioritized system for patient safety. We will expand the use of PDAs for patient identification to all departments and strive to provide patients with a convenient and comfortable environment.”
