Former NFL Player Gosther Cherilus Causes Airplane Disturbance
Fights with Crew and Urinates on Other Passenger
Flight Diverted... Uncooperative During Arrest
A former American professional football (NFL) player caused a disturbance on a plane by urinating on a passenger, sparking controversy. On the 18th (local time), Fox News reported that "former NFL player Gosder Cherilus (40) caused a disturbance on board a Delta flight heading to Dublin, Ireland, by urinating on another passenger."
At the time, the flight attendants requested police assistance, and the flight reportedly returned to Boston Logan International Airport. Upon landing, police officers on board asked Cherilus to leave the plane, but he became angry and showed uncooperative behavior.
Eventually, the police forcibly removed Cherilus and arrested him on charges of disorderly conduct and interfering with flight attendants. He was arraigned at the Boston Eastern District Court that day. Judge Debra DelVecchio reportedly scolded Cherilus, saying, "What you did was outrageous."
According to the investigation, he appeared intoxicated when boarding the plane and argued with flight attendants over seating issues. About an hour after the flight began, he urinated on an elderly passenger. He then reportedly assaulted another passenger and took that passenger's seat.
As the plane returned to the airport, other passengers on the same flight experienced inconvenience, such as having to book new flights. Cherilus explained on social media that "he took a sleeping pill he does not usually use, which caused behavior different from his usual personality."
A Delta Air Lines spokesperson stated, "Due to a disruptive customer, the flight returned to Boston Logan, and the individual was arrested by law enforcement. Delta Air Lines has a zero-tolerance policy for illegal behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement. We apologize for the travel delays caused."
Cherilus was the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions and played for the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before ending his playing career after the 2016 season. He is scheduled to appear in court this October.
