The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has urged special caution regarding health supplements presumed to be smuggled from North Korea through China, stating that "North Korean food and drug products carry concerns of heavy metal contamination."
The problematic product is Angungwoohwanghwan, which is promoted as effective for hypertension and gastrointestinal diseases. It is known to be smuggled into the country via Chinese traders traveling from Sinuiju, North Korea, through Dandong, China.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety stated that this product is not officially approved domestically, and therefore the import routes, scale, and adverse effect status cannot be identified. A ministry official said, "We will request cooperation from the Korea Customs Service to strengthen crackdowns."
