Actor Jang Geun-suk revealed that he has been battling thyroid cancer.
On the 16th, Jang Geun-suk uploaded a video titled "Hello, this is Jang Geun-suk. I have a confession" on his YouTube channel 'I am Jang Geun-suk.' In the video, he stated, "It's been a while since I greeted you. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a year ago." He added, "It has been two weeks since my surgery," and "I still can't open my mouth fully."
He continued, "I couldn't bring myself to tell you because I was worried many people would be concerned," and explained, "Fortunately, the surgery went well." He also said, "For more than eight days, I was too scared to move my body or exercise," but added, "Now, two weeks after the successful surgery, my condition is very good." He even hinted at a trip to Jeju Island, saying, "I am planning to regain my health and go on a trip."
It is known that Jang Geun-suk was diagnosed with thyroid cancer around October last year and underwent surgery in May.
Thyroid cancer may cause some issues such as pain, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing, but often shows no specific symptoms. Therefore, over 95% of thyroid cancer patients are diagnosed incidentally during health checkups. Although it is known as a mild cancer, if it invades the nerves or muscles that control the airway, esophagus, or vocal cords, it is classified as an aggressive cancer. In such cases, surgery involves removing the tumor along with the affected bronchus or esophagus and performing reconstructive surgery.
Jang Geun-suk established himself as a Hallyu star and earned the nickname "Asia Prince" through works like 'You're Beautiful' and 'Beethoven Virus,' and recently appeared on the Netflix variety show 'The Influencer.'
