113 Franchise Headquarters with High Plastic Waste Generation and 12,000 Businesses in Seongsu-dong, Geumho-dong, Yongdap-dong to Receive 30 Dedicated Plastic Waste Bags and Notices from August to Accelerate Household Waste Reduction Efforts
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it will actively promote the "Activation of Waste Vinyl Separation and Disposal" project to reduce household waste.
Waste vinyl is a recyclable resource, but it has often been mixed with general waste in volume-based waste bags and incinerated or landfilled. Accordingly, Seongdong-gu has launched an intensive campaign to raise awareness and establish the practice of separating and disposing of waste vinyl.
The district plans to first target 113 franchise headquarters, where the amount of waste vinyl generated is significantly higher than in ordinary households, and 10,012 businesses concentrated in Seongsu-dong, Geumho-dong, and Yongdap-dong to spread the culture of waste vinyl separation and disposal.
Accordingly, since August, the district has been distributing 30 dedicated bags for waste vinyl separation and disposal along with informational leaflets to each business as part of focused guidance efforts.
According to the distributed leaflet, vinyl materials such as cushioning materials (air caps), snack and coffee packaging vinyl, and colored vinyl including black bags can be separated and disposed of. However, items such as string, wrap (supermarket food wrap), and vinyl contaminated with solid substances like oil or grease are not subject to separate disposal and require caution. Waste vinyl heavily contaminated with food waste should be rinsed with water to remove foreign substances before separation and disposal.
After using all the dedicated waste vinyl bags, residents can separate and dispose of waste vinyl by placing it in transparent or translucent general vinyl bags according to recycling separation guidelines.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "We ask for the active cooperation of residents to ensure the stable establishment of waste vinyl separation and disposal," and added, "We will strive to create a more pleasant urban environment by reducing household waste through resource recycling."
