Cheonan City Plans Its Own Event After Independence Hall Liberation Day Ceremony Is Canceled

"We Will Maintain 37 Years of Tradition"

Cheonan City Plans Its Own Event After Independence Hall Liberation Day Ceremony Is Canceled

Amid controversy over the cancellation of the Liberation Day celebration for the first time in 37 years, Cheonan City has decided to hold its own ceremony for the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day.

Kim Seokpil, Deputy Mayor of Cheonan City, explained in a briefing at Cheonan City Hall on the 14th, "The ceremony, which has been held every year since the opening of the Independence Hall on August 15, 1987, was canceled this year. Considering the significance and legitimacy of Liberation Day, the patriotic spirit of independence activists, and public opinion, we have decided to organize our own event."

He added, "Cheonan City takes pride in being the hometown of numerous patriots such as Yu Gwansun, Lee Dongnyeong, and Lee Beomseok, and as a city of loyalty and patriotism. Although we regret the cancellation of the official celebration, the city will strive to honor the spirit of the independence fighters and patriots, and ensure that the event allows citizens to reflect on the meaning of liberation."

Deputy Mayor Kim stated, "Although the Independence Hall is located in Cheonan, it is not a city facility, so we have decided to coordinate with the Independence Hall to hold the event. As the safety of our citizens is our top priority, we will do our utmost to ensure safety management."

Previously, with the recent appointment of Kim Hyungseok as the new director, the government-hosted Liberation Day celebration was canceled for the first time in 37 years, as he decided to attend the event himself.

Director Kim has been a controversial figure as a New Right member even before his appointment, and with the cancellation of the celebration, calls for the withdrawal of his appointment are growing.
