Frequent Smoking and Drinking Effects
A study has found that the number of men dying from cancer will increase to 10.5 million by 2050, a 93% rise compared to 5.4 million in 2022.
On the 12th (local time), according to the New York Post, researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia published a study in the American Cancer Society journal 'CANCER' analyzing cancer incidence and mortality rates among men in 2050 based on data from 30 types of cancer and populations from 185 countries.
The study results predict that the number of cancer cases among men worldwide will rise significantly from 10.3 million in 2022 to 19 million in 2050, an increase of about 84%.
The researchers noted, "Men tend to smoke and drink more than women," and "men are more likely to be exposed to carcinogens at work but less likely to undergo cancer screenings."
Among men, survival rates were lower for elderly men aged 65 and over compared to younger men. The number of cancer cases in elderly men is expected to increase from 6 million in 2022 to 13.1 million in 2050, with deaths rising from 3.4 million to 7.7 million during the same period. The researchers explained this is due to lower resistance to treatment and the initiation of treatment at more advanced stages of the disease, making medical costs difficult to bear.
Lung cancer is expected to continue causing the highest incidence and mortality rates worldwide in 2050. Currently, lung cancer ranks first in cancer mortality rates in many countries around the world. The number of lung cancer cases and deaths is projected to increase by more than 87%, according to the researchers.
Prostate cancer is expected to surge by 136% by 2050. This is influenced by the longer lifespan of men, allowing more time for cancer to develop. Other cancers such as malignant mesothelioma, skin cancer, and bladder cancer are also expected to occur more frequently.
The researchers advised that to reduce cancer risk, people should avoid smoking and drinking, and consume fruits and vegetables instead of red and processed meats. Adequate sleep, regular exercise, and habits that protect the skin from sunlight are also important. Additionally, elderly men need cancer screenings and appropriate treatment.
